Scania further expands battery-electric vehicle range
Scania commissioned a new battery plant and a new assembly line for electric trucks in September 2023. With this, the Swedish brand is ready for a zero-emission future and can produce a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) for almost any application.
Scania’s offering has reached a new level with the updated battery-electric vehicles – which include new green batteries, an e-adapted chassis – and services such as Scania Charging Access. Electric driving thus becomes more attractive and relevant to a wide range of customers, regardless of their transport assignments.
Up to 390 kilometres of range
Scania’s next generation of battery-electric trucks for regional use has impressive figures: gross train weights can reach up to 64 tonnes, range is up to 390 kilometres, payload capacity is up to 375 kW and the highest power output – 400 or 450 kW (around 610 hp) – is significantly higher than that of the most powerful 13-litre engine.

“Apart from the real long-distance transporters or for the very heaviest applications, there are few buyers today who do not find an electric solution for their operational activities,” says Bas van der Zanden, director e-Mobility Scania Benelux. “Of course, there are still certain applications that probably cannot be run electrically in the near future, but many buyers will be amazed when they see what these trucks are capable of today and what their efficiency is when combined with our digital services.”
Scania’s latest electric trucks for urban and regional distribution are offered as rigids and also as tractors. The new and modern battery packs offer great flexibility and customers can now also choose cabs from the R and S series. As usual, the range will vary and depends on weight, handling, weather, driving style and so on. Take a 27-tonne tipper with six batteries: it can cover up to about 350 km between each charge. An hour of charging can then add another 270 km of range.
No need for 350 kW charging points
An added bonus is that 350 kW charging points are not needed to achieve reasonable charging times: a 130 kW charger adds 100 km of range in one hour for a truck with a consumption of 1.3 kWh/km.
Scania uses battery cells from Swedish manufacturer Northvolt, which have a lifespan of 1.5 million kilometres for powering trucks. The company’scarbon footprint is about a third of comparative industry benchmarks.
Charging 100%
One of the main advantages of Scania’s batteries is their charging characteristics. Unlike many other battery packs, Scania’s can be repeatedly charged to 100% without affecting their service life. Moreover, they have a straight charging curve, which means they charge at the same rate whether they are near full or near empty. The straight charging curve gives predictable charging times and the long battery life ensures low TCO.
