In an extensive interview with the Dutch Volkskrant, Bart De Wever (N-VA) is deeply concerned about the impact of drug crime in his city. In doing so, the mayor does not spare the port: “as leaky as a colander” is the verdict. According to De Wever, the path of least resistance to get drugs into Europe runs through Antwerp. That the port is very vast makes control more difficult than in Rotterdam, where the access routes to the port are a bottle neck. Meanwhile, De Wever fears that the drug mafia is about to exert political influence in the city as well. In the same article, an anonymous police official testifies that corruption of workers within the port has now permeated all levels. A grim state of affairs, on the very day that the comprehensive Flow Plan, the overall package of measures against Antwerp drug smuggling, is kicking off.
