In our Flows magazine on training and careers, we wanted to know why someone starts a training or career in logistics. That was the starting point of a short interview with eight people. Today, we provide the first testimonies, also on video.

Among the participants in the testimonies are (working) students, recent graduates, trainees and a lateral starter. This produced very diverse stories and nice insights. And they all agreed on one thing: the logistics sector is a versatile and international environment where there are many opportunities for a wonderful future. Alexandra Bogaert is sales manager Move Intermodal and Flows Rookie of the Year 2021. She is the first to explain why she chose logistics.

Why did you choose an education/career in logistics?
“I studied Commercial Sciences at Hasselt University. Then I started at Move Intermodal via a traineeship, a very good opportunity because I was still searching for exactly what I wanted to do. Thanks to such a programme, you can go through all departments and see what suits you best. That’s how I ended up in sales and since January 2023 I have been sales manager at Move Intermodal.”

“My undergraduate degree in Commercial Sciences was very broad, but I did notice that my interest was in logistics. Fortunately, there was a master’s in logistics – you don’t find that at every university anyway – and I chose to gain some more specific knowledge. I am still very grateful to Professor Braekers because thanks to his recruiting introduction to logistics I ended up in this sector.”

What are the strengths?
“It is a unique programme and one of the great strengths is that within the programme you have the opportunity to do an internship. That way, you end up on the shop floor of a logistics company, and so you get a better view of the practical side – in addition to the theoretical side of the study.”

What are the challenges?

“The biggest challenge in my eyes is to get young people excited about the course. The idea that it is/should be a hard man’s world still dominates the sector too much. But what many young people don’t know is that there are just so many different jobs. People often think only of dockers and drivers, which are of course cornerstones, but the full puzzle is only put together by adding a lot of other jobs. That is a potential that is not seen by everyone.”

What direction do you want to go in?

As a sales manager, I would like to build lasting relationships with customers. I also want to be able to develop and develop myself. As a message, I would like to add that logistics is a fun and diverse sector: you come into contact with everyone and you feel part of a family. It’s a big sector but at the same time a small one, because you immediately connect with everyone.
