Liege Airport is setting up an intelligent transport system around the airport zone for better mobility. To this end, Liege Airport is working with Sofico and SPW Mobilité et Infrastructures.
Liege Airport, Sofico and SPW Mobilité et Infrastructures are joining forces in a project to monitor mobility flows. The system should provide objective data for the development of future projects or to improve mobility around the airport.
There will be 10 camera-equipped counting sites around the airport zone to analyse flows in the various zones. These include Cargo City North, West, East, Liege Logistics and Airport City.
Mobility
The first step will be a monitoring system measuring all flows of trucks, light vehicles and buses. “Mobility is a concern of the surrounding municipalities, local residents and operators,” Laurent Jossart, CEO of Liege Airport, said at a press conference on Wednesday 25 January. “A few months ago, a study identified a number of junctions that need to be worked on. The analysis of flows around the airport is one of our priorities because the development of the airport must go hand in hand with respect for the mobility of local residents and all road users.”
ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras will be used for traffic counts and surveys. “By collecting more data, we understand traffic better and can manage it more dynamically,” says Michaël Almer, general manager of Sofico. “As manager of major roads in Wallonia, funding this type of project, which contributes to the development of intelligent highways, is one of our priorities.”
End of 2023
The SPW Mobilité et Infrastructures will be responsible for collecting, storing and processing the data. There will be more than fifty thousand per day. That data will be at Liege Airport’s disposal for at least ten years. The installation and commissioning of the intelligent cameras is planned for the end of 2023.
