DHL’s sorting centre at Brussels Airport is bursting at the seams due to the surge in e-commerce, protective materials handling and its role in vaccine transport. In spring, DHL considered several avenues: more European sorting centres or expansion of the existing one. The long-term contract with Prologis is a first step. “After above-expected high growth due to covid-related demand for pharma and e-commerce, DHL Express was looking for a partner to support this growth,” explains Freek De Witte, Public Affairs manager DHL Express Hubs & Gateways Belgium.
Prologis’ distribution centre is a logical choice, as it is located next to DHL’s existing facilities. “The location of the Prologis distribution centre, with direct access to both the tarmac and the Brussels ring road was decisive in DHL’s choice,” says Marijn van den Heuvel, director Capital Deployment & Leasing at Prologis.
