A year and a day after saying goodbye to Dennie Lockefeer, the chair named after him was officially presented last Monday. The turnout from the Antwerp port community was considerable. Not surprising when you see that 29 companies and bodies, including such resounding names as De Vlaamse Waterweg, the Antwerp Shipping Association ASV, terminal operator PSA, and Van Moer committed themselves as sponsors for the new chair. Result: an annual budget of 113,000 euros per year and a commitment to keep that support going for at least three years. 5,205 euros was also raised in private donations. Not a bad result, considering that the minimum annual budget for a chair at the University of Antwerp is 70,000 euros. Co-initiator Christa Sys readily admits it is more than she could have hoped for when the idea was first mooted at Dennie’s farewell in January last year.
