Permit for Zeebrugge construction dock for new Antwerp Scheldt tunnel

Construction of the Scheldt Tunnel, Antwerp’s third river crossing, is another step closer. That is what construction manager Lantis announces. Today, Flemish Minister for the Environment Koen Van den Heuvel granted the environmental permit for the construction of a construction dock for tunnel elements in the port of Zeebrugge. This effectively allows the works to start. The works will take place in five phases. Afterwards, the construction dock will be demolished. From summer 2020, preparations will start for pumping out the dock and building the eight tunnel elements. In 2023, tugs will bring the elements one by one to their final destination in Antwerp to assemble the tunnel. More than 50 years ago, Antwerp’s Kennedy Tunnel was built in the same way.
