Looking back on 2017
2018 is just around the corner and before looking ahead, I would like to take a moment to look back at 2017. The least we can say was that last year was an eventful one. On the one hand, a good year, with nice growth figures and a lot of projects. Just think of the commissioning of DHL Express’ new hub or the huge steps we made with Air Cargo Belgium, our community organisation. People from abroad look with admiration at the results we have achieved in such a short time. In addition, the first applications also went live on our ‘BRUcloud open data sharing platform’. Started embryonically three years ago but growing rapidly in a short time, with already a lot of interest from other airports. But 2017 is also the year where we painfully had to conclude that, despite many years without elections, Belgian politicians cannot formulate an answer to give the airport a stable legal framework within which it can grow and operate. The Brussels noise fines continue to hang over us like a sword of Damocles. It simply cannot be explained that a B747F, the most widely used cargo plane in the world, which can and is allowed to fly anywhere in Europe, risks fines in Belgium for a daytime flight. All instructions from the Belgian government and air traffic control may be followed, Brussels thinks its way. And you then also have to wait a year and a half to find out how high your fine might be. Incomprehensible…
