The transport world has indeed changed considerably since 1978. The container ship was just beginning its rise and terminals mainly served ‘conventional’ traffic. In Antwerp and other European ports, export flows were still dominant. There was no concept of globalisation of the economy. Outside Japan, Asia was still a developing region. Back then, a truck consumed 40-50 litres of diesel per 100 km, compared to half today. Transport companies were focused on the highly regulated national market.
