The European Council has finally reached an agreement on climate and energy policy until 2030. The already quite stringent targets for 2020 were tightened for the period after that. By 2030 – within 15 years – EU CO2 emissions must fall by 40 per cent. For the sectors already subject to the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), a 43% reduction is targeted, and for ‘non-ETS’ sectors such as transport it is -30%. Not against today, but against the reference year 1990. By 2030, Europe also wants to increase the share of renewable energy in consumption to at least 27% and to reduce energy consumption by at least 27%.
