Record number of schoolchildren made aware of blind spot danger
The transport organisation Transport & Logistiek Vlaanderen (TLV) started ‘Safe on the Road’ in Flanders in the 2001-2002 school year. The target then was 100 school visits per school year. “This number was smoothly achieved every year thanks to the hard work of numerous transport companies. However, it was not easy to organise so many school visits because the participating hauliers had to free up a vehicle and three staff members for one day, on a voluntary basis. They do this to give theoretical and practical tips to pupils from third to sixth grade on how to stay out of danger zones in the immediate vicinity of a truck,” says TLV policy officer Frederic Keymeulen. He stresses that what makes the Safe on the Road campaign unique is that it is the hauliers themselves who give the lessons, backed by their own experience on the road.
