West Flanders port cell calls for quick decision on second sea lock
“Back in 2004, the Flemish government started a study on a new, additional sea lock,” Marc Adriansens clarifies. The CEO of ICO Terminals is chairman of Havencel West-Vlaanderen, a joining of forces between the association of port companies APZI and the employers’ federation Voka West-Vlaanderen. “In 2009, the Flemish government considered Carcoke site as the most suitable location. That choice was reconfirmed after additional study work in 2014 and included in the coalition agreement of the current Flemish government. But after the decision to work through the new process approach of ‘complex projects’, a lot of time again went into additional studies. The result is that after 13 years of research and study, we still don’t see any progress. In fact, a new lock could and should have been in place a long time ago.”
